    CROPPING PATTERN
    The total geographical area of the District is 1.24 lakhs Hectares are accounted for in revenue records. The net cultivable area is 0.595 lakhs Hectares. the weather conditions in the Valley as well as in the District being temperate, multiple cropping is not successful. Paddy and maize are main crops, pulses and vegetables are also grown in different areas of the District. However, area under wheat is shrinking while the area under fodder is in increasing at a faster speed.

    LIVESTOCK
    Rearing of Live stock is a subsidiary economic activity for the people in the District. This is because of existence of large chunks of pastures and growing of fodder crops on agriculture and during Rabi Season extensively. The livestock consists of Cows, Oxen, Buffaloes, Horses, Ponies, Sheep, goats, poultry and other animals. The production of mild and its product is increasing considerably.

    AGRICULTURAL HOLDINGS
    The total number of agricultural holding as per Agriculture Census of 1991-92 in the District was 102.1 Thousands covering an area of 57.7 Thousand Hectares out of this 14.55 percent holdings are above one Hectare. It is thus obvious that majority of farmers are living below poverty line. Average holding size is 0.57 Hectare.

    COMMUNICATIONS
    The total road length in the District is 1152.70 Kms. which includes 398 Kms. black topped roads. Thus the average road length in the District works out to 81 Kms. 100 Sq. Kms. area and over 205 Kms. per lakh persons. These figures are better than the averages at State level.

    TRANSPORT
    The private buses are main mode of mass transport. Although there is fair network of roads, the number of buses operating on the various routes exceedingly low to meet the increasing demand of the people.

    DRINKING WATER
    The drinking water supply system has been extended to all the villages. The main source of water are Nalas, Kanals, Oozing, Springs, Tube wells etc.

    HEALTH
    The present strength of Medical Institutions in 223 in which there are 162 Doctors in position against sanctioned strength of 213. Thus there is a Doctor for every 2335 souls and a Medical Institution for every 2230 persons at projected population of 1991.

    HOUSING
    As per 1981 Census the number of occupied residential houses was 44274 and the average number of persons per household was 7.

    EMPLOYMENT
    The Unemployment problem especially among the educated youth has assumed alarming proportions. As per District Live Register there are 5568 educated Unemployed Youth as against 1491 in 1984. The Engineering degree Holders and Diploma Holders were of the order of the 210.

    INSTITUTIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE
    There are 53 branches of different banks in the District comprising 25 branches of commercial banks and 16 Regional Rural Banks with Bank-Wise break up as under:- 1. JKB = 17 2. SBI = 06 3. PNB = 02 4. UBI = 01 5. EDB = 16 In addition, there are 7 branches of J&K State Cooperative Bank and 4 branches of J&K Central Land Development Bank in the District. The Jammu and Kashmir Bank is the Lead Bank for the District branches. Besides, Jammu and Kashmir Bank, the other nationalised banks have also started their activity.

    INCOME
    Inspite of being situated in the proximity of the summer Capital of the State, the per Capital income as per survey conducted in 1970-80 was Rs. 1050/- in this District as against Rs. 1222/- at the State level.
