      District Pulwama comprises of 554 villages which are regrouped in 4 Tehsils viz. Shopain, Pulwama, Tral & Pampore, Six Community development blocks and six notified area communities. The District is bounded by Srinagar in the North, Budgam & Poonch in the west and Ananthnag in the south. The Geographical are of the district is 1398 Sq. kms and the administrative center of the district is situated at Pulwama, 31 kms away form Srinagar. For general convenience and for revenue administration the district has sub division at Shopain.

      As per 1981 census, the district has a population of 4.04 lac souls which has been projected and estimated at 5.16 Lac souls for the year 1991. About 91% of the population live in rural areas & 9% in urban areas. As per in 1981 census. 20.47% were literate in the district. The male literacy rate was 30.56% and the female literacy rate was 9.12% only. The literacy rate for the rural areas has been worked out to be 19.12% and that of the urban areas to be 34.10% as per 1981 census. The total enrollment position has risen to 1.10 lacs viz. 0.60 lacs at Primary School level, 0.22 lacs at Middle school level and 0.28 lacs high school or above level. There are 841 Educational Institutions in the district.

      Out of the total reporting area of 0.90 Lac hects gross area sown is 0.78 Lac hects & net area sown is 0.51 Lac hects. Area under forest is 729 kms. Area under fruits is 27000 hects. Apple is the major fruit crop of the district followed by almonds and walnuts. Double cropped area is 0.29 Lac hects. Main crop grow in the district are paddy. Maize, oil seeds & oats. District Pulwama is famous all over the world for Saffron Cultivation which is mainly grown in Krewa land of Pampore, Kakapora and Pulwams blocks. The area under Saffron cultivation has been extended to Tral blocks.

      The livestock population of the district as per census 1997 is about 8.44 Lac heads comprising 4.48 Lac cattle, 3.34 Lac sheep, 0.33 Lac goat, 0.15 Lac others. There 136 veterinary institutions in the district. The number of sheep extension center centers is 49 including 4 mobile centers. District Pulwama due to its bulk production of milk is called Annand Of Kashmir. Abount 2.50 Lac liters of milk are marketed to Srinagar and other districts every daily.

      For the last two consecutive years district Pulwama was hit by prolonged spell of draught. The counter the draught situation in the district an action plan of an amount of Rs. 400.00 lacs were released and that too could not be drawn from the Treasury for want of advance drawl and non-available of cash as such required funds for clearing the liability may be provided as an additionality to the district. During 1999-2000 to tackle the situation of draught in the district, 800 irrigation pumps are being provided to the beneficiaries on subsidy basis under SGSY.
