The magnificent Dal lake.
District Srinagar
is the summer capital of Jammu
& Kashmir State.
It is located on the banks of River Jehlum and is about 1585 Mtrs above the
sea level. The total area of the district is 2228 sq.kms. On the South of the
District, the district of Pulwama and Anantnag are located , on the north
west districts of Kupwara and Baramulla and on extreme North the District of
Kargil while on south west side the District Budgam.
The District is as such in the centre of the valley
thickly populated city of Srinagar
with a population of about 7.08 lacs as per the 1981 census. There are
4 developmental blocks and three tehsils in the district. The No. of villages
is 175 with a rural population of about 1.75 lacs. The district is
centre of trade business and tourism. The literacy rate in the district is
about 34% which is higher than other districts of the valley. There is
one University, two Medical College and one Regional Engineering
College besides many
other colleges in the district. All the villages of the district have been
provided with potable water electricity, primary health and primary
educational facilities.
All the villages in the district are connected with the
network of roads both pacca and Kucha with the district headquarter and the
Panchayats. The famous lakes like Dal, Anchar and Manasbal are located in
district Srinagar.
There is a vast wildlife sanctury in the district namely Dachigam Rukh. The Mughal
Gardens like Nishat
Shalimar, Cheshmashai Harwan
are famous tourst spots of the state which are
located in district Srinagar.
The lake of Dal is full of beautiful Shikaras
and houseboats which provide residential facilities for the tourists from
inside and outside India.
The district has number of big hotels with all modern facilities in it which attracks the tourists to stay there. The religious places
of different communities like Jamia Masjid , Khanka Mouhlla Hazratbal, Chatti
Pathshai, Shanker Acharya are located in Srinagar District.
The prestigious institute
of Medical Sciences which provides
health facilities to the people of the state and from the outside state is
also located in district Srinagar
at Soura. The district is also the seat of power as the office of the Chief
Minister and Governor are located here alongwith the Civil Secretariat.
